Orthodontic Emergencies in Worcester, MA

At Lahair & Gallagher Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we’re committed to making your child’s orthodontic experience as comfortable as possible. Here’s what to do if the unexpected happens:

Urgent vs. Routine: When to Call

  • Urgent Emergencies: Involve facial injuries or severe pain not relieved by over-the-counter medication. Call our office immediately during business hours or our after-hours emergency line.

  • Routine Issues: Include loose brackets, poking wires, or lost appliances. Call during regular hours, and we’ll schedule an appointment to fix the problem. Please don’t come in without calling first, as we need to ensure we have the time and tools ready for you.

Handling Common Orthodontic Issues

  • Discomfort: Soreness after adjustments is normal. Over-the-counter pain relievers and warm compresses can help.

  • Loose Brackets/Bands: If it’s still attached to the wire, leave it and cover with wax if it bothers you. If it comes off easily, save it and call us.

  • Loose or Poking Wire: Try gently repositioning it with tweezers. If that doesn’t work, cover it with wax and call for an appointment.

  • Lost Appliances: If a retainer or expander is lost, call us immediately to prevent your teeth from shifting.

Prevention is Key

Most breakages happen because of hard or sticky foods, or using teeth as tools (like chewing on pens). Choose braces-friendly foods and avoid habits that can damage your appliances. Remember, frequent emergency visits due to preventable damage may incur a fee.
